Related Experience:
Donna Geffner earned her doctorate from New York University in 1970 where she was an NDEA fellow. She has been the Director of the Speech and Hearing Center at St. John's University since 1976 when she initiated and developed both the Center and Undergraduate Speech and Hearing program. From 1980 to 1984, Dr. Geffner conceived, wrote and developed a Masters degree program at St. John's University in Speech Pathology and Audiology which she now directs. In 1983 she was promoted to Full Professor and was named Chair of the Department of Speech, Communication Sciences and Theatre and served until 1992, when she was appointed Director of the Graduate Programs. St. John's University awarded her the President's Medal for Outstanding Faculty Achievement. The New York City Speech-Language-Hearing Association awarded her its Professional Achievement Award in 1994, the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association presented her with their Honors in 1998, and the NYS Speech-Language-Hearing Association awarded its honors to her in 2000. Since her entry into the field in 1970, Dr. Geffner has presented over 150 papers at National and State professional meetings, has published over 50 Articles and Chapters, edited for Topics in Language Disorders, and edited a monograph (#26) "Language and Communication Skills of Deaf Children" with Harry Levitt and Nancy McGarr, published by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, Rockville, Md., 1987. She was an editorial consultant for Volta Review and American Journal of Audiology. She served on the New York State Licensure Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

Dr. Geffner served as President of the New York State Speech-Language and Hearing Association and was elected for 4 terms (17 years) as the New York Legislative Counselor to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, to which she was also named Fellow. She served on its Education Standards Board, a national accrediting agency for graduate programs, and was elected Vice President for Academic Affairs of ASHA, the national association, 1995-1997. Following that position, she was nationally elected Pres-Elect in 1998 and served as President of ASHA in 1999 with a membership of 97,000. She is a Past-President of this association which now has 100,000 members. The Advisory Board of the American Guidance Service has recently appointed her to its Advisory Board.

Dr. Geffner is licensed and certified in both Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and consults to corporations in both those capacities. She has presented workshops around the country and has lectured widely to professional groups, parent organizations and educators on topics such as Attention Deficit Disorders and central auditory processing skills. She is a communication consultant to industry and has given workshops on Presentation Skills and Conflict Management.

In the past, Dr. Geffner produced and hosted a major network television education series on NBC for which she received an Emmy nomination and a series for CBS for which she received a Citation from the President's Commission on the Handicapped. She continues to appear as a spokesperson for other network and cable television and radio programs pertaining to education for the handicapped. She has made numerable appearances on television, radio, and cable broadcasts.
